After a couple dialogs you will automatically start skimming the text and then just outright skip the lines that aren't marked as essential. All these super detailed descriptive texts, etc.

There's so much crap that could be cut and nothing of value would be lost. I mean, Fallout 1 didn't have that much text either, but it feels great and to the point. It took me till Numenera to learn that it's really about the quality.

and of course that meant lots of text (the mods all failed btw). At least in the Fallout modding community, everyone wanted to make the next Planescape. I remember very well how we all back in the days were super hyped for 'lots of text', because the original Planescape had 'lots of text' as well. When you're done, you bite into it and find all the shopping you did and time you took in the kitchen was to make a fresh, hot turd sandwich.The game is the perfect example that players didn't want 'lots of text'. You persist, and find the preparation easy enough, so that now you're starting to look forward to the meal you'll have out of it. When you read it, it requires a lot of ingredients that aren't easy to come by and you won't use in any other dish. I feel like the game is a recipe you've heard is a lot like your favorite dish. Then you end the game with thousands of shins and nothing to spend it on would have been nice for like 1,000 of it to make it's way to you earlier. To a lesser degree, money was a problem too, as there's a lot of good gear about midway through the game that you can't get unless you saved your shins from the early game.

I restarted when I figured out how to get a place to sleep i could afford so I could beeline to it, and even then I was frustrated. I think the design problems were that you needed these limited resources to do anything and often didn't have a way to get them back until later in the game, leaving you unable to succeed. I liked the story, I liked the characters, and I enjoyed the vast middle swath of the game. I just finished TToN an hour ago and I have to say, the beginning is almost designed to repel you, and the end is essentially a boot to the head. I didn't regret backing the kickstarter and didn't want my time back when I finished, but I didn't get any of the DLC and won't bother with Pillars2. I thought it was ok, but I couldn't care about the story or the characters. It has an engaging storyline with a slightly awful ending (but what doesn't these days?) and a few genuinely creative ideas and systems tcuked away in there.

Still, I've enjoyed my thirty/forty hours with Tides, especially as I picked it up for ВЈ17 a few weeks after release. Tides isn't helped by some of the stuff in its setting either, which often feels like its trying to out-weird PS:T rather than do anything interesting with the Ninth World as a whole. PS:T was a bloody amazing game when it came out and is still a great one now, but some of the things it did (such as the afore-mentioned walls o' text, or its clunky sort-of turn-based battle system) have aged incredibly poorly rather than try to innovate, or even just borrow ideas from other games, the developers leaned into it all in the name of that great spiritual successor taste. I don't know that its bad, per se, but it definitely suffers (in much the same way that Pillars of Eternity did) from riding the nostalgia bandwagon for Planescape so hard.
